While the Disney cruise ships themselves are a fabulous vacation destination, they are also a floating 'Fantasyland', traveling to beautiful and exotic ports of call. Beware that the passport rules for American travelers have changed, and may or may not affect your travel plans. They are planning to make passports required for cruise ship travelers soon - perhaps as early as January, so be sure to keep posted as to the rules. Even when passports are not required, having one certainly makes disembarking much quicker, and the wait for passports is extremely long due to the changing rules, so if you need a passport, be sure to apply sooner rather than later.

"Jamestown 2007" Events Are Already Making History In Virginia

"We had built and finished our fort, which was triangle-wise, having three bulwarks at every corner like a half-moon," George Percy wrote several months after 104 English men and boys had disembarked on a swampy island on the James River in Virginia on May 13, 1607. That first year only 38 would survive diseases, brackish water, Indian raids and starvation, never imagining they had founded a new nation or that 400 years later their achievement would be celebrated in a series of concerts, exhibitions and new attractions in Virginia under the banner, "Jamestown 2007."

As the English settlers were sailing toward the New World, the wildly erratic and wildly talented artist Caravaggio had just killed an opponent over a "foul" call during a tennis match in Rome. Four hundred years later his massive "Still Life on a Stone Ledge" would be one of the highlights of Old Masters paintings from the Medici Collection that just opened at the Muscarelle Museum on the campus of the College of William & Mary in Williamsburg.

A few years later a young English girl (name unknown) responded to announcements that women were needed as future wives and mothers for the all-male Fort at Jamestown. She packed her limited belongings in a canvas bag and arrived with a small group of other husband-seeking women in 1619. How could she know that one day her hopeful face would greet visitors to the new Archaearium (archeology museum) in the National Park on Jamestown Island. It had been restored by forensic scientists from her skull found preserved in mud near the Fort. This new museum, now open, offers views of more than 1,000 recovered artifacts bring to life the stories of how the early settlers lived.

On March 9, 2007 the Civil War's most famous sea battle comes back to roaring life at the Mariners' Museum's USS Monitor Exhibition. The ironclads, the Union's Monitor and the Confederate's Merrimac, flung cannon balls that bounced off each other as harmless as ping pong balls. You will see all this in the Battle Theatre with the floor reverberating to the sounds of gunfire. Later you can view remains of the Monitor (which sank a few months after the inconclusive battle in a sudden Atlantic squall) on display, including the turret, anchor and even mustard bottles (used by the crew to disguise the taste of un-refrigerated meats). The Mariner's Museum is located in Newport News, VA.

The Jamestown Settlement (with re-creations of the original Jamestown Fort, an Indian village, and of the three ships that delivered the first settlers) has now opened 30,000 feet of new galleries with life-size buildings and exhibits. Here you can walk through a 1607 London street scene with the sounds of a horse-drawn carriage clopping toward you on the cobblestone street, and then stroll into a typical Planter's House. Along the way you will see statues of many historic figures and artifacts from the three cultures that blended on the tiny Jamestown island - English, American Indian, and African. Later in 2007 "The World of 1607" will open with paintings, antiques and weapons dating back four centuries will also open at the Jamestown Settlement.

The latest more specialized Cryosurgery procedure takes advanced skills and is more time-intensive, but allows for localization of the abnormal nerve using a stimulator probe. Also, the area is checked for motor nerves. Those are the nerves that control muscle movement and should not be frozen for pain relief. It is a more exact and precise procedure, so there is little to no guessing. When freezing the nerve, I am more confident that the actual nerve is freezing and not just an area close to the nerve, says Dr. Katz.

The Cryosurgery procedure sounds fairly straightforward, but its more than technique and technology. Another important step in obtaining pain relief and success involves the correct diagnosis and finding the source of the pain. This can be a challenge because many patients have a hard time describing the type and location of their pain. The pain may also vary from day to day. Specialized protocols are used to locate the nerve causing the problem and to diagnose and prove the painful condition prior to performing any procedures. Dr Katz believes that this extra step is critical to good outcomes. Spending individualized time with each patient makes a world of difference.

So what should my expectations be from the Cryosurgery procedure?

The majority of patients get significant pain relief for at least 6-8 months. The relief can be long-lasting if the underlying problem that initially caused the pain is treated. Not all patients treated with Cryosurgery will get relief. Some may require more than one treatment and others may not get relief at all. Also, after treating an area there may be numbness that can be long-lasting. Other previously unidentified pain areas may become more apparent after pain relief in another area. In those cases, the other involved nerves can also be treated. Complications are rare, however with any procedure, they can occur. This should be discussed with your Cryosurgeon prior to the procedure.

So dont give up, Cryosurgery may be the answer for relief of your painful foot and ankle problems.

I used to think that everything in my life was geared around saving money. Even when it came to my writing I would rather waste time doing things the long way rather than spend money that would help speed my career along.

Bu then something happened that made me realise that my writing time is worth far more than money and now my time is much more profitable.

Check for obvious accident damage. Accident damaged cars can be spotted by little tell tail signs. Look for signs of overspray to panels, bumpers and fittings, look for areas of paintwork that are inconsistent with the general condition of the car (these may indicate filled dents, filled rotten patches) and check that all the tyres are wearing evenly (uneven wear may indicate the car isnt running straight and true as a result of a crash or poorly executed accident repair).

If you are happy there are no obvious clues to suggest accident damage check the general condition of the car for wear. Is the amount of wear consistent with the mileage of the car? Worn foot mats, shiny steering wheels and worn/damaged driver seats are not what you would expect to find on a low mileage car.

Does the car have missing interior fittings or scratched paint work? Would you expect a car you owned from new for a number of years to have accrued a similar amount of damage? Make a mental note of the amount of wear for bargaining purposes should you decide to buy the car.

Check the vehicle for rot in the doorways and wheel arches. A little rot can become a serious costly problem after as little as one year. A lot of rot, especially to structural areas of the car where panels and sections of the car come together could indicate the car is not safe to drive.

Once you have established the car looks to be cosmetically genuine and that the condition is as you would expect for the cars age start to look at the mechanics of the car. Check the oil on the dipstick. Are there bubbles in the oil? If there are bubbles this is a sure sign of water in the oil and likely to result in expensive repair. Check the water filler. Is there a white residue on the cap or visible in the filler area. This is an expensive sign of oil in the water. Check the oil filter (easy to spot, generally looks like a brightly painted tin can sticking out of the side of the engine) does it look to be recently fitted or like it has been on for some time. This is a standard part that is replaced at service and can indicate how the owner has been treating the car.

Start the motor up. Does the engine rattle or have a pronounced ticking noise or does it sound healthy? Is the exhaust loud or well silenced you dont need to be paying for a new exhaust system. Once the engine has warmed go look at the exhaust. Are there large quantities of smoke, black or white being omitted? Both can indicate expensive faults. At this stage check to make sure headlamps, indicator and brake lights work.

If all seems fine the next step is a test drive. Check the steering. Is it light or vague, neither is a good sign. Does the wheel have a large amount of play in it? Steering is important for clear safety reasons. The steering should be responsive and direct. Neither to heavy nor light.

Check the brakes. Do they inspire confidence? They should pull the car firmly to a stop in a straight line without fading or feeling as if they are about to run out. Find a car park or space where you can turn the car on full lock in both directions. Do the front wheels grind or shriek? This could indicate expensive wheel bearing problems.

If you do not come across these problems then it is fair to say you have a solid used car that is unlikely to be a lemon. Now if you can recall all the little details you spotted you can use these points to bargain a good price and buy the used car with the confidence that you have avoided a lemon.

It is now standard practice for tyre retailers to impose a tyre disposal charge when you change your tyres, which tends typically to be about 1.00 a tyre. You may wonder why you have to pay this charge - after all tyre disposal charges have not always been the norm.

As a guarantee, members of the scheme are subject to a stringent audit process conducted regularly by independent environmental audit specialists.

The Responsible Recyclers Scheme also promotes best practice in the tyre recovery industry and helps protect against the continuing scourge of fly-tipping.

Old School (DVD) Review

One of the funniest movies of 2003, Old School is silver screen gold for anyone who lived the life of a college party animal or once inhabited the halls of a beloved fraternity house. In the spirit of Animal House and PCU, Old School brings together a strange amalgam of immature males who wreck havoc on their college campus through wild parties, outrageous pranks, and outright criminal activities. Starring Luke Wilson, Vince Vaughn, and Will Farrell (of Saturday Night Live fame), Old School reads like a great SNL skit. You'll laugh yourself silly over this one.

When Mitch Martin (Luke Wilson) returns home early from a business seminar at his extraordinarily boring job, he finds his girlfriend cheating on him. They break up, and he's forced to move out. Moving into an off-campus dwelling at his old school, Mitch's friends Frank Ricard (Will Farrell) and Bernard "Beanie" Campbell (Vince Vaughn) reminisce about the glory of their fraternity days. The days of all fun and no work Frank gets married, despite Beanie's attempts to talk him out of it at the altar (during the ceremony), but he quickly grows despondent and longs to enjoy the freedom of his youth once again. Meanwhile, Beanie is a bona fide family man with a successful business, but he too would like to relive the fun of their fraternity days.

Together, the three men decide to turn Mitch's house into a fraternity. They recruit a series of misfit students from around campus - nerds, social rejects, homeless men, and ninety-year-old womanizers. The hazing rituals are beyond description, and the parties are ridiculously outlandish and hilarious. All is going well (for everyone but Frank whose wife catches him running down main street naked) until Dean of Student Affairs Gordon Pritchard (Jeremy Piven), a former estranged classmate of the three men, decides to crack down on the fraternity. When he does, the fraternity must pass a series of tests and obstacles in order to retain their charter (and this, the climatic high-point of the film, is also the funniest of all).

Fun from beginning to end, Old School will not win any awards for dramatic scenes or cinematography. But it will win a lot of points as an outright hilarious comedy. If you haven't seen this film, then you really don't know what you're missing. Old School is a classic cult comedy fulfilling the dreams of countless former college fraternity members who ache to relive the greatest party days of their lives. Because it's so funny, Old School is a definite must-see film. Miss it at your own risk.

North Miami Beach: Higher Than South

North Miami Beach is located roughly halfway between Miami and Ft. Lauderdale. Once known as Fulford (after a prominent citizen of the area), citizens of the town changed the name in 1931, after realizing that Fulford sounds like it might be the birthplace of the hillbillies from Deliverance. Now often known as NMB, North Miami Beach is a hotbed of shopping and clothing optional beaches. There are dining and cultural opportunities to rival anywhere else in South Florida, and strange attractions as well. Take, for example, the Ancient Spanish Monastery a genuine Spanish monastery (built in the 12th century) that was disassembled and moved brick by brick to the new world by well-known plutocrat and newspaper tycoon William Randolph Hearst. Ever a popular site for weddings, it is worth a visit, if only to remind you what can be accomplished with singular vision and limitless resources.

If you are looking for a good time in North Miami Beach (and who isnt), theres a great place you have to try. Far away from South Beach and Coconut Grove, Bermuda Bar and Grill is a great nightclub, though with a decidedly different vibe than hotspots further south. The bartenders seem to wear kilts (a little difference) and rather than the typical fruity, umbrella filled drinks that are popular in SoBe, at the Bermuda youll find people enjoying bottles of beer and shots (a bigger difference). The cover is quite reasonable, and Wednesday is ladies night, where women drink for free and force men to do their bidding. The food is pretty good, and at more of a reasonable prices than the food at the clubs in South Beach. The place is quite large; it features seven bars and two floors, and it's open until the sun comes up (Wednesday through Saturday). All in all, the Bermuda Bar and Grill is the perfect place to go if you are tired of dealing with the crowds and parking situation of SoBe and Coconut Grove.

But, just because the Bermuda is a little more laid back than other clubs doesnt mean that you shouldnt go there in style. Mirage Limo is ready, willing, and able to cart you to almost any club of your choice (provided its in Florida), and a limousine is a great way to go to any hotspot. Give the Bermuda Bar and Grill a try; youll be glad you did.
